Landing your dream internship: tips + advice

From a young age I’ve always loved health, skincare, and basically everything beauty. After starting Cocoa Inspired and growing as a blogger, I’ve found a passion for writing and visually curating this space where people around the world can come to find: inspiration, confidence, and well-being. Now, I am able to fuse my passions into one. I am the new marketing + blogging intern at DefineMe Fragrance!  You can find some of my work on the Define Me Fragrance blog, Beautified Spotlight

Working for a company that does good and promotes empowerment across the globe is everything to me.  I am extremely grateful to have this opportunity and I believe it will be an amazing learning and growing experience.  Here are my top tips for landing YOUR dream internship!  HERE WE GO:

1. Go All In

So many people feel discouraged by the competitiveness of landing the internship they want.  You absolutely cannot have this half and half mindset of feeling somewhat motivated but also somewhat scared.  Go all in and when you begin your search, do everything with an outlook that you WILL land an amazing internship and you will be great. Mind over matter people!

2. Have Multiple Resumes Prepared

Don’t get it twisted, this isn’t lying or being dishonest! Obviously, you will have the same education, work history, and skills on all resumes but since you will probably be applying to multiple companies, it’s a good idea to tailor each resume in a different order to highlight certain key points.  If you’re applying to a company focused on BEAUTY then in your objective it should include the words “Beauty”, for a more FASHION based internship, your objective should highlight that and vise versa.  As far as the order of your work experience, you are able to organize it however you want.  The most popular way is to do it chronologically, but maybe for example you are applying for a web design position and you had a part time job as a coder a year ago.  You should put that job at the top of your work experience to highlight it because it pertains to the position you are applying for.  YOU NEED TO MAKE YOURSELF FIT INTO THE POSITION AS WELL AND STRONGLY AS YOU CAN!

3. Cover Letters: Short, Sweet + To the Point Please!

What is the point of a cover letter?  The point is to basically say, “Hello!  My name is ____ and I would like this position because ____ and I would be a killer candidate because ____! THE END”.  I’ve made the mistake of typing up a full page cover letter but it’s better to keep it short simple and to the point.  Choose less but POWERFUL words. That is the key!

4. Be Open Minded

Keep an open minded attitude at all times.  Apply to internships that you may consider 3rd and 4th tier because you never know what it could be like and how amazing working for a certain company can be that you didn’t initially want to before.

5. Apply, Apply, Apply, and Apply Some More.

Do NOT apply to the 3 companies you’re interested in and sit back and relax.  Push yourself and literally apply to 20+ positions or more.  Chances are, for every 10 companies you apply to you might hear back from only 2 or 3.  You just need to keep as many doors open for yourself!

6. Relax, It’s Just an Interview

Yay! You have an interview!….now what? Make sure you do your research ahead of time and have a good chunk of knowledge about the company in your back pocket.  The two answers you should also have ready are: What makes you excited/passionate about their company?  and What makes you the best candidate for the job? Plan your outfit ahead of time and arrive early.  Most importantly, be confident and don’t worry.  Believe it or not, the person who is interviewing you is human too which means they completely understand that your nervous and will probably do their best to make you feel as comfortable as possible. Just think of it like a normal conversation and enjoy it!

7. Celebrate Your Accomplishments

Congratulations! You landed an internship.  If you don’t end up getting your #1 choice, everything is just fine!  Getting any internship is an accomplishment and should be recognized. Every step is a step closer to where you want to be no matter how small or big it is.  You need to trust that everything happens for a reason and you are placed in a company for a reason!

With Love from Jenni.
